§ Ms Glenda Jackson[holding answer 6 February 1998]I have asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, to write to the hon. Member.
Letter from Peter Nutt to Mr. Robert Key, dated 9 February 1998
Glenda Jackson has asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency to write to you in reply to your recent PQ about the installation of speed cameras on the A36 at South Newton. Lawrie Haynes, the Chief Executive, has asked me to reply as he is away from the office at present. You should have now received Lawrie Haynes' letter of 3 February on this subject. We plan to replace the traffic activated sign on the Salisbury bound carriageway of the A36 with a speed camera. We also plan to install signs on the A36 indicating the11W presence of speed cameras. We have consulted the Parish Council and residents of South Newton on the environmental aspects and we hope that the equipment will be in place by the end of March. We are still awaiting the full report from Wiltshire County Council and we will look at further measures, including 'gateway' treatment, when we consider that report.
