HL Deb 04 February 1998 vol 585 cc117-8WA
Baroness Wharton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the forthcoming consultation on the draft statutory instrument relating to the proposed restrictions on the retail sale of Vitamin B6 supplements will provide for reconsideration of the scientific basis upon which those proposals were based, or merely the way in which they will be implemented. [HL308]

Lord Donoughue

No decision has yet been taken on the precise form of the consultation exercise.

Baroness Wharton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish in the Official Report the tabulated information prepared by officials summarising the representations which they have recently received in relation to the proposed restrictions on the retail sale of Vitamin B6. [HL307]

Lord Donoughue

No systematic analysis has been carried out of the representations received in relation to the proposed restrictions on the retail sale of Vitamin B6, nor any summary prepared. The regulations required to implement the controls will be subject of a formal consultation process and, subject to the views of respondents, the responses received will be made publicly available.

Baroness Wharton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have to compensate manufacturers and retailers of Vitamin B6 supplements for the loss of business arising from the proposed restrictions on the retail sale of such supplements; how those plans for compensation compare to that made available to beef farmers following bans on the sale of their products; and how they account for any difference in treatment between the two groups. [HL306]

Lord Donoughue

We have no plans to compensate manufacturers or retailers of Vitamin B6 supplements for the loss of business arising from the proposed restrictions on the retail sale of such supplements.
