To ask the President of the Board of Trade what was the average level of regional selective assistance grant made in Thanet during 1997; how many such grants were made; and how many were at the maximum level. [25749]

There were no offers of Regional Selective Assistance grant made at the maximum limit in 1997. During 1997, 22 offers of Regional Selective Assistance were made to companies in Thanet. The total amount of grant offered was £1,279,600. 208 jobs were to be created and 30 safeguarded, representing an average cost per job of £5,376.
