HC Deb 02 February 1998 vol 305 c544W
Mr. Faber

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what are his priorities for the EU-South Africa trade talks during the United Kingdom presidency; and if he will make a statement. [26974]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

Early progress in negotiating a Trade and Cooperation Agreement, together with parallel agreements on fisheries and wines and spirits, between the EU and South Africa is a priority for our Presidency. We shall press for an outcome on terms that are liberal, WTO-compatible, and of benefit to both parties. We are in close contact with the Commission, the South Africans, and other EU member states to that end.
