HC Deb 02 February 1998 vol 305 cc490-1W
Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made of the total financial contribution of non-Scottish United Kingdom students to the Scottish economy in off-campus expenditure for each of the last five years. [25348]

Mr. Wilson

[holding answer 26 January 1998]: The Scottish Office has made no such estimate. However, I am aware of the report "The Impact of the Scottish Higher Education Sector on the Economy of Scotland" (the McNicholl Report), commissioned by the Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals and published two years ago, which suggested that non-Scottish UK students contributed £100 million annually in off-campus expenditure on goods and services.
