HL Deb 02 February 1998 vol 585 cc80-1WA
Baroness Wharton asked

Her Majesty's Government:

What are the criteria by which they assess the validity of the advice received on nutritional matters from the committee on toxicity if it conflicts with the majority of opinions expressed by qualified nutritionists and other scientific experts. [HL305]

Baroness Jay of Paddington

Members of the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) are recognised nationally and internationally as experts in their disciples which include the interface between toxicology and nutrition. Cross-membership with the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy(COMA) ensures access to more detailed nutritional expertise as required.
