HC Deb 16 December 1998 vol 322 cc547-8W
Mr. MacShane

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was the average number of hours per week spent teaching GCSE subjects by teachers, excluding head teachers and deputy headteachers, in LEA secondary schools in England. [62029]

Ms Estelle Morris

In 1996–97, in maintained secondary schools in England that had pupils in years 10 and 11, full-time teachers spent an average of 28 per cent. of the school week teaching years 10 and 11 in subjects which can be tested at GCSE, although not all such teaching will be for GCSE. For a school that has eight periods a day of 35 minutes each, this amounts to 6.5 hours a week.
