To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what estimate he has made of the number of units of accommodation for which there should be a television licence; how many licences were issued for(a) monochrome and (b) colour receivers; and how many people were reported for failing to possess a television licence in the last year for which figures are available. The estimated number of premises requiring a television licence as at 31 March 1998 was 23.6 million. At that date, there were 21.3 million colour television licences and 379,000 black and white television licences in force. During the year to 31 March 1998, 364,000 prosecution statements were taken in respect of television licence fee evasion and there were 112,000 prosecutions.
