HC Deb 02 December 1998 vol 321 cc226-7W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the meetings held with(a) General Pinochet and (b) his staff by the British Embassy in Santiago, Chile, in each of the past three years. [62057]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

In respect of meetings with Senator Pinochet while he was Commander-in-Chief of the Army, I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave him on 12 January 1998,Official Report, column 23. In the course of its normal work, the British Embassy in Santiago has had regular contact with the Chilean military, both before and since the Senator retired from the Army in March this year. Since the reply given in January, Embassy staff have had no meetings with the Senator or his private staff.

Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what official facilities were afforded to General Pinochet during his current visit to Britain. [62059]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

A VIP suite at Heathrow Airport was made available to General Pinochet on his arrival.
