Mrs. Gillan

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his oral statement of 27 November 1998,Official Report, column 443, if he will list the five diplomatic posts he is closing. [62060]

Mr. Fatchett

The five diplomatic posts to be closed are: Chaing Mai (Thailand); Cleveland (USA); Kuching (Malaysia); Pusan (S. Korea); and Seville (Spain).

Mrs. Gillan

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on which date the consulate in Lyons will be closed. [62063]

Mr. Fatchett

The Consulate in Lyons will not be closing.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the diplomatic posts that he has expanded since 1 May 1997, indicating the(a) number and (b) grades of the diplomats in post (i) on 1 May 1997 and (ii) currently. [62061]

The posts which have seen a net increase in jobs between 1 May 1997 and 30 November 1998 are listed.

Between those two dates there was an overall reduction in our UK based manpower, so a greater number of slots were deleted elsewhere to provide these additions. It would be disproportionately expensive to list all of the grades of all the diplomats in post between these times.
