HL Deb 28 April 1998 vol 589 c26WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the Written Answer by the Lord Simon of Highbury on 10 March (WA 27), what are the "necessary environmental and regulatory requirements" which owners of spent fuel are required to meet when deciding whether to reprocess it or seek alternative options for waste management. [HL1560]

The Minister of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Simon of Highbury)

The environmental and regulatory requirements which an owner of spent nuclear fuel should take into account in deciding between the various options for its management would include those which he would expect the relevant regulator to apply to them under the provisions of the Nuclear Installations Act 1965, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 and any other relevant legislation.
