HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c423W
Mr. Öpik

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many applicants to the boards of regional development agencies are under the age of(a) 25 years, (b) 30 years and (c) 35 years; and if he will make a statement. [38969]

Mr. Caborn

Applications for Regional Development Agency board membership have been received from a variety of sources and full monitoring details are not yet available. Of the applications made to the Government Offices, 4 are from people under 25 years, 6 are between 25 and 29 years and 20 are between 30 and 34 years. I will write to the hon. Member when the full information is available.

Mr. Öpik

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what measures he is taking to ensure that the boards of regional development agencies include young people; and if he will make a statement. [38968]

Mr. Caborn

The information pack provided to candidates made it clear that service on the board of a Regional Development Agency may be a useful development opportunity for young people. In identifying board members, consideration will be given to candidates who have demonstrated significant potential early in their careers.
