HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c519W
Mr. Brady

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his policy on the practice of general practitioners charging their patients to verify an application for a postal vote. [38930]

Mr. George Howarth

Under their terms of service, General Practitioners are required to issue certain certificates to their patients free of charge. These include attestations for an absent vote on grounds of physical incapacity.

If a patient is charged a fee for this service, and is unable to resolve the matter with the doctor concerned, the local Health Authority has the power to investigate such complaints and take appropriate action.
