To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many and what percentage of the population have been prescribed prozac in each of the past five years; and if he will estimate the figures for the next five years under present trends. [38363]

Mr. Milburn

Information on the number of people who have been prescribed prozac over the past five years is not available. The number of prescription items dispensed in England for prozac for the period 1992 to 1996 and an estimate for 1997 to 2001 is shown in the table. Under present trends it is estimated that prozac dispensing will increase by about 0.5 million prescription items per year.
