HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 cc267-8W
10. Mrs. Ann Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps have been taken to protect the lives of prisoners in the Maze prison. [36898]

Mr. Ingram

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State made a statement to the House on the Narey Inquiry report on 2 April 1998.

Mr. Narey has made 59 recommendations, many of them relating to the personal security of prisoners. It is our intention to take forward as many of these as possible now that the report is published, but other recommendations require detailed consideration and project teams are being put in place to address these.

In addition my right hon. Friend has asked the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Sir David Ramsbotham, for an assessment of the regime at Maze in so far as it impacts on prisoner safety. We will consider his recommendations on receipt of the report.
