§ Sir Alastair GoodladTo ask the Secretary of State for International Development what percentage of United Kingdom net development assistance has been(a) bilateral and (b) channelled through multilateral development institutions, the EU and the Commonwealth in 1997–98; and what will be the comparable figure in 1998–99. [38379]
§ Mr. FoulkesExpenditure data for 1997–98 are still being brought to account. Detailed analysis will be provided in British Aid Statistics later in the year. We estimate though that in 1997–98 50 per cent. of development assistance will be spent through bilateral channels and 50 per cent. through multilateral institutions. Around 31 per cent. of development assistance will be spent through the EC.
In 1998–99, on present plans, we estimate that 46 per cent. will be spent through bilateral channels and 54 per cent. through multilateral institutions. Around 35 per cent. of development assistance will be channelled through the EC.
