HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c313W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to reduce traffic congestion on the A550 at its intersection with roads at the English border; and if he will make a statement. [38131]

Mr. Hain

Maintenance activities are currently planned to minimise traffic congestion. The use of overnight and off-peak working whenever possible together with an embargo on all but essential works during Bank and school holiday periods ensures that full road capacity is available for peak flows. Future proposals include the provision of enhanced driver information and traffic management systems with longer term proposals for capacity enhancement improvements at critical points on the network. These proposals are being assessed as part of the ongoing review of the Welsh trunk road programme. Details of the strategy for and role of the programme will be included in the report on the roads review to be published later this year.
