§ Mr. Whitehead
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans he has to review the method whereby United Kingdom members of the EU Committee of the Regions are appointed; and if he will make a statement. [841]

§ Ms Armstrong
The first term of the Committee of the Regions ends on 25 January 1998. Before making nominations for new appointments to the Committee we intend to consider the arrangements for making these nominations and to consult local government.
