HC Deb 20 March 1997 vol 292 c802W
Mr. Bayley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted as emergencies from home with a principal diagnosis of stroke over the last three years to each NHS trust; and what proportion of these patients were discharged home within 56 days(a) as a crude percentage and (b) as a percentage standardised for age and sex. [20859]

Mr. Horam

Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. Length of hospital stay of stroke patients, and discharge home are listed in a set of 14 clinical indicators we are preparing to pilot throughout the national health service as part of a commitment given in the White Paper marking the fifth anniversary of the citizens charter.

Mr. Bayley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted as emergencies with a principal diagnosis of stroke as defined by international classification or disease codes 430–34 and 436–38 in the last three years for each NHS trust; and what proportion of these patients(a) survived after 30 days and (b) survived after 30 days after standardisation for age and sex. [20858]

Mr. Horam

Standard information on hospitals admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. As to the additional information requested, this calls for the linking of hospital admissions with deaths in the community, something that will not be possible in the foreseeable future.
