Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many animals were exported by species from the United Kingdom in (i) 1995 and (ii) 1996(a) with a for breeding certificate, (b) with a further fattening certificate, (c) with a for production/breeding certificate, (d) with a for slaughter certificate and (e) in total. [17826]

[holding answer 27 February 1997]: For exports of cattle, sheep and pigs to other member states in 1996, I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to him on 24 February 1997, Official Report, column 76–77. It is not possible to provide the additional information in the form requested.

Table 1 shows the numbers of farm animals certified for export to other member states in 1995. Table 2 gives details of exports of poultry to other member states in 1996. The figures in these two tables are collated from the ANIMO system and remain provisional and subject to amendment.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what training hauliers must receive in order to be authorised to conduct humane slaughter during a sea crossing. [18997]

[holding answer 6 March 1997]: I am not aware of any training provided with this specific aim.

Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to his answer of 31 January,Official Report, column 406, if (a) a competent stockman is present on every sailing of the MV Cap Afrique from the United Kingdom when it is carrying livestock and (b) when animals are not accompanied by drivers on the MV Cap Afrique there is always a competent stockman on board. [20698]

The attention of the operators of the MV Cap Afrique was drawn to the need to comply with the requirement for animals to be accompanied by an attendant.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on his policy on the export for slaughter of live farm animals to another EU member state where those animals are to be slaughtered in a manner which is in breach of the Community provisions on the welfare of animals at slaughter. [20514]

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps his Department takes to ensure that pigs and piglets exported through Dover do not come into contact with any cloven-hoofed animals other than bovine animals or swine for breeding or production. [20621]

Mrs. Browning

[holding answer 17 March 1997]: A local veterinary inspector certifying pigs for breeding or production for export to another EU member states must receive a declaration from the exporter or transporter confirming that they will not come into contact with other cloven-hoofed animals other than bovine animals or swine which fulfil the conditions laid down for intra-Community trade. Additionally, spot checks, including supervised loading of animals on to livestock vessels, are carried out to ensure compliance with EU rules.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many pigs exported during December 1996 and January 1997 were (i) acquired and (ii) loaded at(a) an EU approved collection centre and (b) a lairage. [20619]

[holding answer 17 March 1997]: None. All pigs exported in December 1996 and January 1997 were acquired and loaded at their premises of origin.
