HC Deb 20 March 1997 vol 292 cc795-7W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the annual revenue obtained by the Treasury through taxation paid by military and civilian personnel employed by the Ministry of Defence, broken down into (a) taxation on income associated with their employment and (b) tax revenue arising from VAT and other sales taxes. [20742]

Mr. Soames

I have been asked to reply.

The amount of income tax paid by military and civilian employees, or by my Department on their behalf within the terms of PAYE settlement agreements, was some £1.3 billion in the financial year 1995–96, the latest year for which complete information is available. The amount of VAT and other sales taxes paid by MOD employees is dependent on individual domestic transactions and is thus not available.
