To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was(a) the average age of teachers entering the state and maintained sector, (b) the average age of teachers in that sector and (c) the youngest and oldest teachers who took voluntary redundancy or early retirement (i) in the latest year for which figures are available and (ii) in 1989–90. The average age of new entrants and the average age of all teachers in the maintained nursery, primary, secondary and special sector is as follows. The youngest age at which a teacher may be granted premature retirement is 50, and the oldest 64, and those are the ages of the youngest and oldest teachers granted premature retirement in the two years in question. The Department does not collect information on voluntary redundancies.
