HC Deb 10 March 1997 vol 292 cc111-3W
Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will list those illnesses and conditions for which the Prodigy prescribing pilot system is able to print information leaflets; [19125]

(2) if he will list the patient groups which have been consulted while developing the patient information provided under the Prodigy prescribing pilot system. [19124]

Mr. Malone

Phase 2 of the Prodigy project will include patient information leaflets for the majority of conditions covered by the system. A full list of the conditions covered in phase 1 and copies of the phase 1 guidelines were placed in the Library in July 1996, following publication of the Prodigy interim report.

Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the total number of guidelines in phase I of the Prodigy prescribing pilot system; and how many, and which, of these have been updated for phase II. [19127]

Mr. Malone

Phase 1 of the Prodigy system incorporated advice and recommendations covering 244 main diagnoses and 566 sub-categories. These were placed in the Library in July 1996. In the light of comments received from users of the system and others, a proportion of the guidelines have been reviewed beginning with those most frequently used by general practitioners in the phase 1 trials. A team is currently working on reviewing further guidelines for use in phase 2, and will continue to seek comments on the use and content of the guidelines as the project progresses.

Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will provide a breakdown of the costs incurred to date on the Prodigy prescribing pilot system. [19126]

Mr. Malone

To date, approximately £2.3 million has been spent on Prodigy phases 1 and 2, incorporating software development, hardware and evaluation costs. As a full breakdown of costs would include commercially sensitive information relating to the suppliers involved, it would not be appropriate to publish such details.
