To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what plans she has to curb the annual rate of growth in social security spending. [908]

Mr. Field

Under the last Government the bills from social and economic failure led to spiralling Social Security costs. We plan to reverse that pattern, beginning with our programme to help young people and the long term unemployed to move from welfare to work.
