To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what is the length of franchise currently operated by Great North Eastern Railways; and what plans he has to allow for the franchise to be lengthened. [1142]

The franchise term runs for seven years from April 1996. We have no plans to allow for the term to be lengthened.
