To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the(a) maximum, (b) minimum and (c) average payment made under the arable area payments scheme in 1996–97. [1722]

Payments which have been made to farmers in Scotland under the 1996 arable area payments scheme area as follows:

1. (a) Maximum: £414,321¹
2. (b) Minimum £71¹
3. (c) Average £15,389¹
