HC Deb 13 January 1997 vol 288 cc156-7W
Sir Cranley Onslow

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what recent representations his Department has received about the enforcement of the provisions of the Import of Live Fish (England and Wales) Act 1980; and if he will make a statement. [9413]

Mr. Baldry

I have received representations from the Environment Agency and other bodies about introductions of non-native fish, and I am concerned that existing controls have not been entirely successful in preventing the introduction and spread of such fish into inland waters in England and Wales. I intend, therefore, to consult interested organisations on the possibility of making an order under the Import of Live Fish (England and Wales) Act 1980 to provide greater safeguards against the introduction and spread of non-native fish.
