HC Deb 13 January 1997 vol 288 c157W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received urging him to implement the selective cull. [9439]

Mr. Baldry

My colleagues and I have received many such representations, mainly from farmers and their representative organisations. The Government announced on 16 December that the selective cull would go ahead in the new year, and the necessary legislation was made and laid later that week.

Mrs. Helen Jackson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many, and what percentage of the cattle slaughtered under the over-30-month scheme have been disposed of; where they are stored; and in how many sites. [10340]

Mr. Baldry

The information requested, as at 5 January, is as follows:

Numbers Percentage
Slaughtered 1,139,799 100.00
Incinerated 43,641 3.83
Rendered 848,798 74.47
In cold storage 247,361 21.70

The meat and bonemeal from animals slaughtered and rendered is stored in 11 dry warehouses in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the tallow is stored at two sites in England. The material in cold storage is stored in 41 depots throughout the United Kingdom.
