To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many pupils in each county in Wales have been included in the assisted places scheme in the last five years; and how many are planned in the next two years. [9850]

The number of assisted place pupils in Wales in the last five years, in each of the counties within which participating schools are located, is shown in the following table, along with information the number of assisted places planned in the next two years. Information on individual pupils' place of residence is not held centrally.

The table for 1996–97 and beyond reflects local government reorganisation and includes the additional places made available through the expansion of the scheme from September 1996, at a further seven schools across Wales. Planned places for Denbighshire are subject to redistribution should the proposed closure of Howells senior school, Denbigh proceed.
