To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total amount spent on local government in North Yorkshire in the year(a) before and (b) after reorganisation. [12526]

Mr. Curry

The total budgeted net revenue expenditure by authorities in North Yorkshire was(a) £546.3 million in 1995–96 pre-reorganisation, and (b) £568.9 million in 1996–97 post-reorganisation.

Comparable pre-and post-reorganisation estimates of capital expenditure are not yet available. However, central Government support—credit approvals and grants—for capital expenditure by authorities in North Yorkshire is estimated as (a) £36.2 million in 1995–96. and (b) £35.2 million in 1996–97.
