HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 c545W
27. Mr. Blunt

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of future police numbers in Surrey. [20185]

Mr. Michael

Under legislation passed by the previous Government in 1994, it is for the Chief Constable of Surrey to determine the number of police officers in the force on the basis of the resources available to him. Ministers have no direct control over police numbers. I understand there were 1,608 police officers in Surrey at the end of September, 98 fewer than in March 1992.
