Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many motor vehicle owners have been charged and convicted of not holding a current road tax licence since 1 January. [21380]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The number of people successfully prosecuted for Vehicle Excise Duty evasion since 1 January is 208,950.

In addition a further 246,188 evaders paid an out of court settlement.

1 The figure includes £10.7 million estimated by the Highways Agency (HA) to upgrade traffic control systems and the like. This amount was not included in the statement made by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to the House of Commons on 27 November 1997 concerning how Government Departments and their Agencies are tackling the Year 2000 Date Change Problem. This covered only the cost of achieving compliance in HA's IT systems (estimated at £4.3 million). HA has not been able to break down expenditure planned between 1998–99 and 1999–2000.
