§ Mrs. Beckett[holding answer 15 December 1997]: I receive numerous representations from business about many aspects of economic performance, including the impact of the current level of sterling on the manufacturing sector and exports. Business people tell me frequently that they need macroeconomic stability over the medium term in order to succeed. The economic policies followed by the Government are designed to achieve that stability.
