HC Deb 15 December 1997 vol 303 c57W
Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if it is his policy to encourage Scottish universities to give applicants with advanced highers direct entry into the second year of undergraduate courses. [20544]

Mr. Wilson

[holding answer 12 December 1997]: It is for the higher education institutions themselves to decide whether to admit a student direct to the second year of a degree course on the basis of Advanced Higher passes. The Government are determined to ensure that the potential of the Advanced Higher in improving standards and the quality of the educational experience in the Scottish sixth year is realised and welcome the positive response of the higher education sector to the Higher Still Programme and to the Advanced Higher. The Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals have indicated that recognition for the Advanced Higher is likely to take a variety of forms.
