§ Mr. WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he has taken to ensure that each primary school in Scotland has at least one teacher trained in modern languages. [20541]
§ Mr. Wilson[holding answer 12 December 1997]: I am continuing the Modern Languages in the Primary School (MLPS) training programme for primary teachers into a fifth phase which will involve 830 teachers. Although in strictly numerical terms sufficient teachers have already been trained to ensure that each Scottish primary school could have at least one trained teacher there are still gaps in provision resulting from staff movement. By the end of school session 1997–98 the total number of teachers trained to teach a modern foreign language to primary school pupils will be around 3,800. Almost £16 million will have been spent on MLPS since the programme began in 1993.
§ Mr. GorrieTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many (i) pupils and (ii) FTE teachers in each education authority there were in(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools and in each case what was the pupil-teacher ratio in (1) the current session and (2) each of the last five years. § Mr. WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to encourage the best school teachers to continue as classroom teachers. [20542]
§ Mr. Wilson[holding answer 12 December 1997]: Successful classroom teachers who lead and inspire our young people should receive recognition and 56W encouragement to continue in their role. Before bringing forward detailed plans, however, I wish to seek the views of interested parties on how that can best be achieved. I have therefore asked the Commission on Scottish Education jointly established by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and the teacher unions to consider the issue. I expect a report in due course.
