HC Deb 15 December 1997 vol 303 c43W
Mr. Garnier

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department if he will list those insurers who have to date agreed to support the Lord Chancellor's reforms of the civil justice system; and if he will provide insurance for litigants acting under conditional fees arrangements [20681]

Mr. Hoon

While the Lord Chancellor, myself and officials have had discussions with insurers about insurance for conditional fee agreements, we have not thought it necessary to seek the support of these, or any other, insurers for the proposed reforms to the civil justice system.

The provisions of insurance must be a matter for insurers. As I have told the hon. and learned Gentleman before, the insurance industry has reacted positively to the proposal to extend the conditional fees scheme and we have been encouraged by the creative approach being taken to developing affordable products.
