HL Deb 11 December 1997 vol 584 c60WA
Lord Brabazon of Tara

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total amount of aid given to Zimbabwe, including both bilateral aid and the United Kingdom's share of European Union aid, for each of the last five years; and what is projected for the next three years.

Lord Whitty

The British aid programme to Zimbabwe for the financial years 1992–93 to 1996–97 was:

  • 1992–93: £39.1 million
  • 1993–94: £24.6 million
  • 1994–95: £27.5 million
  • 1995–96: £14.8 million
  • 1996–97: £11.1 million

The UK share of multilateral aid to Zimbabwe, including that through the EU, for the calendar years 1991 to 1995 (the most up-to-date figures available), was:

  • 1991: £1.7 million, of which £1.1 million through the EU
  • 1992: £6.7 million, of which £2.1 million through the EU
  • 1993: £9.1 million, of which £5.7 million through the EU
  • 1994: £15.8 million, of which £10.6 million through the EU
  • 1995: £7.4 million, of which £6.3 million through the EU

Future aid levels to Zimbabwe will depend on the Zimbabwe Government's commitment to the reduction of poverty, which will be the basis for consideration of the possibility of establishing a partnership as explained in the White Paper on international development.
