HL Deb 11 December 1997 vol 584 cc59-60WA
Lord Bethell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they approve the principle of an elected upper house, or second chamber, of parliament; whether they believe that members of an elected upper house, or second chamber, should be remunerated and provided with secretarial and research assistance at a level enjoyed by Members of the House of Commons; and what powers should be transferred from the House of Commons to this elected upper house, or second chamber.

The Lord Privy Seal (Lord Richard)

The Government will bring forward their proposals for fulfilling their manifesto commitments on reforming the House of Lords in due course.
