To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British nationals currently work for each directorate of the European Commission. [19559]

According to July 1997 figures, the numbers of British nationals working at A Grade in each Directorate-General of the European Commission are as follows:

  • I: 38
  • IA: 58
  • IB: 30
  • II: 11
  • III: 36
  • IV: 17
  • V: 27
  • VI: 32
  • VII: 20
  • VIII: 44
  • IX: 9
  • X: 14
  • XI: 26
  • XII: 48
  • XIII: 43
  • XIV: 5
  • XV: 23
  • XVI: 21
  • XVII: 22
  • XIX: 8
  • XX: 8
  • XXI: 17
  • XXII: 15
  • XXIII: 10
  • XXIV: 8.

In addition, there are the following numbers of British nationals working at B, C and D Grade for the European Commission:

  • B Grade: 237
  • C Grade: 308
  • D Grade: 7.

These figures include staff paid from the Central and Research Budgets, and permanent and temporary staff.
