HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 cc497-8W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the maximum number of Greek military personnel allowed in Cyprus in accordance with its role as a guarantor power; how many Greek Army personnel are presently in Cyprus; how many military aircraft are in Cyprus; which authority monitors the level of Greek military presence in Cyprus; and if he will make a statement. [19512]

Mr. Doug Henderson

Under the 1960 treaties, Greece is allowed to station a force of up to 950 military personnel in Cyprus. We estimate that there are about 2,000 Greek military personnel in Cyprus at present. There are no fixed-wing military aircraft permanently based in Cyprus. No international authority monitors the level of Greek military presence in Cyprus.
