HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 c978W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many schools have held opt-out ballots since 1988, indicating those which were successful; and what percentage this constitutes of(a) pupils and (b) schools in the maintained sector in Wales. [41162]

Mr. Jonathan Evans

Since 1988, 40 schools have held ballots of which 19 were in favour of applying for grant-maintained status. The schools at which ballots have been held represent 5.1 per cent. of the January 1996 pupil population and 1.9 per cent. of the total number of maintained schools in Wales.
