HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 cc998-9W
Lady Olga Maitland

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the recent report by Her Majesty's chief inspector of constabulary on the No. 3 area (north-east) of the Metropolitan police. [41280]

Mr. Maclean

Yes. I have today placed in the Library a note of the recommendations from the report, together with the Commissioner's responses and the police authority responses, which take into account the advice my right hon. and learned Friend and I have received from the Metropolitan police committee.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions over the past 12 months there were two or fewer traffic division cars, other than those dedicated to work on the M25, operating in the Metropolitan police area. [40332]

Mr. Maclean

[holding answer 14 October 1996]: Records prior to January 1996 do not show this precise information. The Commissioner tells me that from January 1996 to August 1996—inclusive—records show that on no occasion were there two or fewer traffic division cars, other than those dedicated to work on the M25, operating in the Metropolitan police district.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of police officers dedicated to traffic division operations in the past 10 years in the Metropolitan police area. [40339]

Mr. Maclean

No records were kept of the number of police officers dedicated to traffic division operations prior to 1994. Figures since then are as follows:

Rank 1994 (as at 31 December) 1995 (as at 31 December) 19961 (as at 31 August)
Superintendent 8 0 0
Chief Inspector 8 5 5
Inspector 30 30 27
Police Sergeant 101 108 109
Police Constable 670 689 685
Total 817 832 826
1 The 1996 figures are provisional.
