Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what her Department spent on youth counselling and information services; what proportion of the budget this represented in(a) 1979–80, (b) 1983–84, (c) 1987–88, (d) 1992–93 and (e) 1995–96; and if she will make a statement. [5274]

Set out in the following table are details of departmental expenditure on the youth service for the years in question and as a proportion of the Department's total education budget. Departmental funding of the National Youth Agency and its predecessor up to 1991, the National Youth Bureau, includes support for the provision of youth information services. The Department's programme of grants to national voluntary youth organisations includes some support for the provision of counselling and information services for young people.
