To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many tourists visited Wales in(a) 1979 and (b) the latest available year; and what they spent in real terms. [292]

The number of overseas visitors to Wales has increased between 1979 and 1995 by 40 per cent. from 530,000 to 740,000, with an increase in annual spending by overseas tourists from £139 million to £197 million at 1995 prices.
