HC Deb 04 November 1996 vol 284 cc338-9W
Mr. Denham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the reasons for refusing Hampshire county council a supplementary credit approval to cover the costs incurred in the case of Digital v. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services. [1938]

Sir Paul Beresford

Because of the public expenditure implications, it is our firm policy not to issue supplementary credit approvals except for purposes falling within certain specified, limited categories. Outside those categories, a SCA would be issued only in the most exceptional circumstances. After very carefully considering all the information provided by Hampshire county council, we concluded there was insufficient justification for the issue of a SCA in this case.
