HC Deb 04 November 1996 vol 284 cc387-8W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current salary of the principal of Clydebank college. [1602]

Mr. Raymond S. Robertson

The annual accounts for 1995–96 for Clydebank college disclose that the principal's remuneration, excluding employers' pension contributions, was £64,000 for the financial year.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the role of the college boards in respect of the merger of Clydebank and Anniesland colleges. [1606]

Mr. Robertson

In the event that both boards of management decide to pursue the possibility of a merger, they would be required to undertake a full option appraisal. This would have to be undertaken in line with the Scottish's Office's merger principles and criteria, which were sent to the Association of Scottish Colleges in June of this year. These criteria require full consultation with students, staff and relevant local and national interests.

Mr. Worthington

To ask The Secretary of State for Scotland what salary has been offered to the incoming principal of Clydebank college; and what contribution to it will be made by the Scottish Office. [1604]

Mr. Robertson

The salary of a college principal is a matter for the college board of management. The Scottish Office will not be contributing to the salary of the incoming principal of Clydebank college, but will be providing financial assistance to the college to enable the incoming principal to take up post before the retiring principal leaves, thus permitting a period of overlap. The scale of this assistance has still to be determined.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current salary of the principal of Anniesland college. [1603]

Mr. Robertson

The annual accounts for 1995–96 for Anniesland college disclose that the principal's remuneration, excluding employers' pension contribution, was £48,000 for the financial year.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland on what date the principal of Anniesland college accepted the post of principal of Clydebank college; on what date his representative met the principals and chairs of both colleges; and on whose initiative the meeting was arranged. [1607]

Mr. Robertson

The principal of Anniesland college accepted in principle the post of principal of Clydebank college on 9 September. The principals and chairmen of both colleges met, at his invitation, an official of the Scottish Office on 12 September, for exploratory discussions on the issues that the boards would have to consider if they decided to examine merger.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what have been the financial terms on which the principal of Clydebank college has accepted early retirement; and what contribution the Scottish Office has made to this settlement. [1605]

Mr. Robertson

The terms of any severance package are matters for the college's board of management to determine with the principal.

From the current phase of the colleges restructuring fund the Scottish Office has provisionally allocated Clydebank college £10,677 towards the principal's lump sum enhancement.
