HC Deb 21 May 1996 vol 278 c156W
Mrs. Fyfe

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action has been taken to improve school meals, following the publication of the report on the Scottish diet by a working party under the chairmanship of Professor Philip James in December 1993. [29302]

Mr. Raymond S. Robertson

[holding answer 20 May 1996]: The provision of school meals, including the standard and quality of the food provided, is a matter for each education authority to determine. Following the publication of Professor James' report, the Government established the Scottish diet action group in November 1994 to make recommendations on action to improve the diet of the Scottish population, including that of children. This group is led by my hon. Friend the Minister of State, and its membership includes Professor James and representatives of educational interests. The group has now completed its work and expects to publish its action plan this summer. The Government will consider how best to advise education authorities in the light of that plan.
