HC Deb 21 May 1996 vol 278 c157W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking with his colleagues in the Council of Ministers to preserve endangered species in the European Union. [29144]

Mr. Clappison

The primary instruments of the European Union to protect endangered species and their habitats, are directives 79/409 EEC and 92/43/EEC. Member states are obliged to transpose the provisions of these directives into national law and to take practical measures to meet their obligations for the conservation of listed species and their habitats.
