Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody, dated 17 May 1996: The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to reply to your recent question about the expenditure on the capital and current maintenance of motorways and trunk roads for each of the last 10 years. Details of motorway and trunk road maintenance expenditure during the period 1992/93 to 1994/95 are available by transport administrative region, as follows:

by the Vehicle Inspectorate on driving instructors to ensure compliance with regulations in each of the last five years; [29544]

(2) if he will list for each contractor which supplies legal advice to the Vehicle Inspectorate (a) the total value of the contracts awarded for each of the last 12 months, (b) the number of cases undertaken over the last 12 months and (c) the number of convictions over the last 12 months. [29531]

  1. a) the number of checks undertaken by the Vehicle Inspectorate on driving instructors to ensure compliance with regulations for each of the last 5 years; and
  2. 593
  3. b) the value of contracts awarded to contractors supplying legal advice to the Vehicle Inspectorate during the last 12 months and the number of cases undertaken, as well as the number of convictions over the last 12 months.
The Driving Standards Agency requests the Vehicle Inspectorate to conduct investigations into alleged illegal instructions by driving instructors. They also request blitz checks with identify those giving illegal instruction. Data is only available for the last 3 years.
