HC Deb 17 May 1996 vol 277 c589W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of(a) dual carriageway and (b) motorway in the United Kingdom are without crash barriers, and if he will make a statement. [28644]

Mr. Watts

Information on non-trunk dual carriageways and motorways is not held centrally.

The relevant figures for trunk roads are as follows: (a) all-purpose dual carriageway trunk roads

  • England: under 31 miles of the programme for installing central reservation safety fencing remains to be carried out
  • Wales: 15 miles has no safety fencing
  • Scotland: 43 miles has no safety fencing
  • Northern Ireland: 74 miles has no safety fencing
(b) trunk motorways
  • All trunk motorways have central reserve safety fencing apart from about a mile in Scotland
